EDURange Cloud: On Demand Cybersecurity Sandboxes Through Kubernetes is an innovative platform that transforms cybersecurity education by providing each student with an isolated, browser-based environment powered by Kubernetes. The system automates deployment and scaling of customizable challenge pods, eliminating the need for local virtual machines and making hands-on labs accessible on any device. Students can safely experiment with real-world attack and defense tools in self-contained environments, allowing for deeper learning without risk to others or disruption to the class. The modular design allows instructors to easily create and adapt exercises, supporting a variety of scenarios such as penetration testing, vulnerability exploitation, and red or blue team challenges, all managed from a modern and intuitive web interface. Classroom pilots have shown high student engagement and reduced troubleshooting for instructors since environments can be reset instantly if needed. The technical architecture is built on Kubernetes, which orchestrates the dynamic creation, scaling, and isolation of every student environment, ensuring reliable and secure performance even as class sizes grow or as multiple labs run in parallel. As an open-source project funded by the National Science Foundation, EDURange Cloud makes advanced cybersecurity labs affordable and accessible, supports research into educational best practices, and is designed for ongoing innovation including future integration of AI-powered hints and analytics. This platform provides a practical and scalable solution for teaching and studying cybersecurity in both classroom and research settings.
